Describing carbon monoxide exposures in Ontario

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning creates a significant public health burden that is entirely preventable. In order to inform successful prevention strategies around CO poisoning, routine surveillance of CO exposures can help us understand how these events occur and how to identify the population at risk.

In Ontario, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) conducts detailed investigations following CO incidents involving emergency services. TSSA data provide unique information on the circumstances that result in CO exposures, which may be useful to public health practitioners wishing to address this important environmental health risk during winter months.

In collaboration with the TSSA, Public Health Ontario has reviewed 10 years of investigation data [2007-2016] to identify and understand predictors of CO incidents and at risk populations. This presentation will highlight our results and discuss our findings in the context of previous research in the area of CO exposures.

Presenter: Elaina MacIntyre

Elaina MacIntyre is the acting Manager of Toxicology and Exposure Assessment on the Environmental and Occupational Health team at Public Health Ontario. Elaina has 10 years of experience working as an Environmental Epidemiologist. She holds a PhD in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene from the University of British Columbia and completed her postdoctoral research at the German Research Centre for Environmental Health.
